UC’s Master of Education Online Program

Curriculum & Instruction
University of Cincinnati’s Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction allows individuals to seek their master’s degree while enhancing their own knowledge and understanding of the American education system. Teachers gain the components of politics, economics, and research while elevating their role as knowledge generators and creators of the classroom. Additionally, the General Studies program prepares teachers to make positive changes in their classrooms, schools, and communities.

Gifted
The Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction Gifted & Talented program focuses on the issues of teaching and learning from the perspective of the practicing classroom teacher who is interested in teaching and/or designing programs for gifted and talented students. Students are provided with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to enhance student learning, and to increase their effectiveness as teachers and leaders in the field of gifted and talented education. The program addresses research, theory, and best practices related to removing barriers to student achievement, learning environment, school culture, and educational reform. Translating theory into practice is a primary emphasis. The MEd Gifted program is designed to produce educators who will identify and resolve common and potential legal/ethical issues related to gifted and talented education.

National Board Preparation
University of Cincinnati’s Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction National Board Preparation program is tailor-made for teachers who are committed to students and their learning and are seeking National Board Certification. These teachers know the specific subjects that they teach as well as, how to teach those subjects effectively to students. Additionally, they are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. Teachers, who are considering the National Board program, think systematically about their practice and learn from experience, they are often members of learning communities. The UC MEd National Board Preparation program is founded on many leadership qualities including truth, efficiency, community, professionalism, democracy, excellence, integrity, and progress.

Reading Specialist
University of Cincinnati’s Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction Reading Specialist program ensures that licensed teachers receive the knowledge and skills needed to support students at differing stages of literacy development as well as from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Teachers enrolled in the UC MEd Reading program will be prepared to use a wide variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction and to offer key strategies to create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing. The program is designed to address the social, cultural and linguistic factors that contribute to a student’s reading and writing development.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
The University of Cincinnati Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program is accessible and attractive to educators working in formal and informal settings interested in integrating mathematics, science, technology, and engineering concepts to enhance learning across the curriculum. It prepares educators to design integrated and project based learning experiences and develops a framework for thinking about the role of STEM subjects in a democratic society.

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages)
University of Cincinnati’s Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program is geared toward individuals who are licensed in single or multiple subject areas and are interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). The program is designed to meet the national TESOL standards. The aim of the program is to prepare theoretically informed and practically equipped, caring, committed, and competent ESL teachers, curriculum developers and consultants, and program administrators for domestic K-12 public and private schools.

Teacher Leader
The Teacher Leader Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction program is designed for those active classroom teachers who are interested in assuming a leadership role and added responsibility within their school (or building) but are not interested in becoming principal. The Teacher Leader curriculum equips teachers with the coaching skills necessary to act as leaders and influence their peers to be better teachers. The program strives to develop reflective educators who can be change agents in the lives of their students, in their school, and facilitate learning communities for all stakeholders.

Educational Leadership
An Educational Leadership degree is about options. Many teachers love the classroom and working directly with students, but know that they can do more. This program will help them become a better teacher and make a greater impact in the lives of students. Every graduate who leaves the Educational Leadership program also gains something incredibly valuable beyond the degree itself: confidence. Teachers who graduate from this program leave promoting a positive school and community culture, providing an effective instructional program, and applying best practice to student learning.

Additionally, this program helps teachers transition their careers into principals or administrators, if they choose. Unlike some teaching positions, administration is a year-round commitment. During summer months, administrators are responsible for planning for the upcoming year, overseeing summer school, participating in workshops, supervising building repairs and improvements, and working to make sure the school has adequate staff for the upcoming school year. Administrators also meet and interact with staff, students, parents, and representatives of community organizations.

Special Education
University of Cincinnati’s Master of Education in Special Education is designed to aid teachers who are interested in enhancing the lives of all individuals with special needs through education, community awareness, and ecologically based service delivery. These teachers are dedicated to meeting the needs of students and understand the call for an educational program to differentiate itself.

The program offers a unique cohort-based curriculum that allows teachers to network with others who seek the challenge of working with students with disabilities and learning differences. This support, along with an engaging and comfortable learning environment, aid teachers in earning a degree that gives them the confidence and communication skills necessary to be successful special needs teachers.
